John, (or anybody else who knows the involved functions) could you possibly tell me which variable(s) I should be tweaking, and which way, up or down? Johns script is so nuanced, that when it runs into something like that, it can't be run at the default settings and must be adjsted. On the vast majority of my transfers, which were good already, it has taken them to another level.īut there are a very few, that because of the way they were shot, (probably high grain, but "fast", film) do have what I feel is excessive grain. What do you use to "rip" the grain from a show? Are you using grain matching tools in After Effects or Resolve? I know you can sample regions of a grain pattern and use that for VFX matching, but I haven't heard of a freeware tool to do this.I have been working with John Meyers 8mm restoration script, and it is truly amazing. With Big-O, I actually went into DaVinci Resolve to use a proper film emulation, and the results work better there, but I wanted something a little more automated here. I just wasn't happy with the result, not to mention it bloated the filesize. Topaz seems to inherently remove quite a lot of noise, even with the denoise sliders turned all the way down, so it's somewhat unavoidable in the process, BUT, I did try adding grain via Topaz in initial tests. It's also not a great scene to test since the stock footage sequences are at least a generation away in terms of film stock (you can see the color differences right away).īut I do see get what you're saying, and yeah, there are plenty of shots where the upscale looks too clean, I'll admit that.
